Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for an ESTEEMED MIRA program, applicants must:

  • Be an incoming freshmen accepted to WSU Pullman.
  • Apply and be accepted to be a member of the WSU Honors College.
  • Have an interest in a biomedical research career after earning a Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D.
  • Be an American citizen or permanent resident.
  • As indicated by high school courseswork, plan to major in a science or engineering field (i.e. biology, biochemistry, biophysics, bioengineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, genetics and cell biology, microbiology, neuroscience).
  • Be available to take part in a six-week summer bridge program.
  • Be from a group that is underrepresented in the sciences:
    • Racial or ethnic groups: Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, American Indian or Alaskan Native, and other Pacific Islander.
    • Individuals with disabilities: Those with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, as defined by legislation.
    • Individuals from a family with an annual income below established low-income thresholds.
    • Individuals from an educational environment, such as those found in certain rural or inner-city locations, that has demonstrably and directly inhibited the individual from obtaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to develop and participate in a research career.
