Close-ups: Undergraduates Who Research
Why do students who are already busy with classes choose to participate in "research" (that is, mentored research, scholarship, and creative activities)? Who are they? What are their majors? What do they learn from their work? Do they receive funding?
At Washington State University, estimates are that as many as 25 percent of undergraduates are involved in some type of mentored research, scholarship, or creative activity.
The WSU Office of Undergraduate Research works to have that percentage climb significantly, with opportunities available to students in every major, from freshman year forward.
